Delicious Sausage Milk Gravy and Homemade Dumplings Recipe
Today, I am thrilled to share with y'all one of my favorite fall recipes. Let me tell you, life doesn't get much better than indulging in my homemade sausage gravy and dumplings! This dish is the epitome of fall comfort food at its finest!
Ingredients:
1 pound of sausage
1/4 cup of self-rising flour
2 cups of milk
Salt and pepper to taste
Ingredients for the dumplings:
1 cup of self-rising flour
1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt
1 tablespoon of butter
1/2 cup of evaporated milk
Instructions:
Making the dumplings:
In a bowl, add 1 cup of self-rising flour and 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt. Stir well. Then, using a pastry cutter or fork, cut 1 tablespoon of butter in the flour mixture.
Next, add 1/2 cup of evaporated milk to the flour mixture and mix until a dough forms, but do not overmix. Overmixing the dough will make your dumplings tough.
When preparing this dish, I prefer to shape golf ball-sized portions of the dough by rolling them in the palm of my hand. However, feel free to get creative and shape the dough into strips, squares, or any other desired shape. For a simpler approach, you can also spoon dollops of the dough directly into the boiling water or broth.
Place the dumplings into a large pot of boiling water or broth. Cover the pot with a lid and allow the dumplings to simmer for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
After simmering, carefully drain the water or broth from the dumplings and set them aside.
Making the sausage gravy:
Meanwhile, cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until it is browned and cooked through. Make sure to break it up into small pieces as it cooks for about 12 minutes.
Sprinkle 1/4 cup of self-rising flour over the cooked sausage in the skillet. Stir well to combine and cook for about a minute to get rid of the raw flour taste.
Slowly pour in the milk while stirring constantly. Continue to cook and stir until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency. This usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
Season the gravy with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Stir well.
Once the gravy is done, add the cooked dumplings and gently stir them.
Serve and enjoy!
