Ingredients Needed

Gather these essentials to start your Southern sweet honey bun journey:

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)

  • ½ cup warm milk

  • ¼ cup granulated Splenda or regular granulated sugar

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 large egg

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup honey

  • Optional: chopped pecans or raisins for filling

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup auger-free powdered sugar or regular powdered sugar

  • 2-3 tablespoons milk

  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preparing the Dough

Start with a soft, pliable dough that will rise beautifully:

In a small bowl, combine warm milk (about 110°F) with the yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy; this activates the yeast.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, Splenda or sugar, and salt.

Add the melted butter, egg, and the activated yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough begins to come together.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Assembling the Honey Buns

Once your dough has risen, it’s time to shape those sweet rolls:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Gently punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 12x8 inches.

Brush the surface lightly with honey. If you love extra fillings, sprinkle chopped pecans or raisins evenly over the honeyed surface.

Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log.

Slice the rolled dough into 1 to 1.5-inch thick pieces and place them in a greased baking dish, spacing them slightly apart for expansion.

Baking to Perfection

Time to let the magic happen in the oven:

Cover the baking dish with a clean towel and let the buns rise for an additional 20-30 minutes, allowing them to puff up.

Pop them into the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Glazing and Serving

Finish with a sweet glaze that elevates these honey buns to a whole new level:

Mix sugar-free powdered sugar or regular powdered sugar, pure vanilla extract, and enough milk to create a smooth, pourable glaze.

Drizzle generously over the warm buns once they come out of the oven.

Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving, and enjoy the aroma of freshly baked Southern honey buns filling your kitchen.

Tips for Success

Use fresh yeast for optimal rising.

Ensure your milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast without killing it.

Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free area to encourage proper fermentation.

Feel free to get creative with fillings or toppings — cinnamon, nuts, or fruit preserves make lovely additions.

Final Thoughts

There’s something truly special about baking from scratch, especially when it results in a batch of warm, sweet honey buns. This recipe isn’t just about satisfying a craving — it’s about creating a moment of joy, sharing a homemade treat, and embracing the comforting flavors of the South. So, gather your ingredients, put on some good music, and let Gin Lee guide you through this delightful baking adventure. Your friends and family will thank you — and so will your taste buds!

Vegetables that contain protein

Vegetables that contain protein If food prices have you scrambling down the aisles of the grocery store trying to find something that's more affordable than meat but still has protein, know that you're not alone! Back in the days when my grandparents went through the Great Depression, it was really tough times, but they survived through the hardships by growing their own food. There are a lot of veggies that actually do contain protein, and they're packed full of additional nutrients that our bodies all need. Vegetables highest in protein: Vegetables high in protein include artichokes, asparagus, beans, bean sprouts, and beans in general: broccoli, Brussel sprouts, chickpeas, green peas, kale, mushrooms, mustard greens, spinach, sweet corn, and turnip greens. For a few examples: Black beans contain 15 grams of protein in just a 1-cup serving. In fact, a 1/2 cup of cooked beans provides close to 7 grams of protein, which is the same as eating one ounce of meat. As for collar...

Have you ever pondered the question, what's the difference between griddle cakes, pancakes, hot cakes, skillet cakes, and flapjacks? Well, today, I would like to tell you the answer to that specific question. Growing Vegetable Plants in Rockwool Cubes

Growing Vegetable Plants in Rockwool Cubes Hey there, fellow gardeners! Today we're going to talk about a cool way to grow your own vegetables using rockwool cubes. It may sound fancy, but it's actually pretty simple and fun. Let's dive in! What You'll Need: First things first, you'll need some rockwool cubes . These are like little sponges that help your plants grow strong and healthy. You'll also need some vegetable seeds, a tray to hold the cubes, and water. I personally use these hydroponic grow trays with dome lids. Step 1: Soak the Cubes Before you plant your seeds, you'll need to soak the rockwool cubes in water. This helps them absorb moisture and provides a good environment for your plants to grow. Step 2: Plant Your Seeds Once your cubes are nice and soaked, it's time to plant your seeds. Make a little hole in the top of each cube and drop a couple of seeds in. Some seeds are so tiny and I generally end up planting more than two in each cube. ...
