What is Henbit? A Closer Look

Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule) is a common, yet often overlooked, plant belonging to the mint family. It’s characterized by its square stem, bright purple or pinkish tubular flowers, and scalloped, heart-shaped leaves. Usually seen sprouting in the early spring, henbit thrives in gardens, lawns, and disturbed areas, giving it the appearance of an unwelcome weed—yet it’s much more than that.

Historically, many cultures have used plants like henbit for medicinal purposes, and today, modern herbalists recognize its potential benefits. Interestingly, the Bible and scriptures often point to God's provision of natural remedies—reminding us that nature’s pharmacy is abundant and accessible.

The Surprising Health Benefits of Henbit

Many people are surprised to learn that eating weeds such as henbit can boost your health. Here are some notable benefits:

Nutrient-Rich: Henbit contains vitamins A, C, and K, along with minerals like iron, magnesium, and calcium—nutrients vital for overall wellness.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Traditional uses include easing inflammation, making it helpful for arthritis and joint pain.

Digestive Support: Consuming henbit can aid digestion and help soothe upset stomachs.

Immune Boosting: Its antioxidant properties help strengthen the immune system.

Natural Detox: Henbit is believed to support the body's natural detoxification processes.

Think of henbit as a tiny green miracle—an accessible, natural remedy that aligns with the biblical idea of divine provisioning.

How to Identify and Harvest Henbit Safely

If you’re intrigued by the idea of eating weeds, it’s crucial to identify henbit accurately to avoid confusion with potentially harmful plants:

Look for: Bright violet tubular flowers clustered along the stem, scalloped leaves in opposite pairs, and a square stem.

Time to harvest: Best in early spring when the plant is young and tender.

Harvest tips: Use sharp scissors to cut leaves and stems. Rinse thoroughly to remove dirt and insects.

Safety note: Avoid harvesting from areas treated with pesticides or near busy roads.

Delicious Ways to Incorporate Henbit into Your Diet

If you’ve identified henbit, you might be wondering how to enjoy it culinary-wise. Here are some simple, delicious ideas:

Herbal Tea: Steep fresh or dried henbit leaves in hot water for a soothing, health-boosting tea.

Salads: Toss young henbit leaves into salads for a pop of flavor and nutrients.

Soups and Stews: Add chopped henbit towards the end of cooking for added greens and health benefits.

Pesto: Blend henbit, garlic, nuts, and olive oil for a unique green pesto.

Remember, as with any wild edibles, moderation is key, and consult with a knowledgeable forager or herbalist if uncertain.

Embrace Nature’s Pharmacy — The Wisdom in Weeds

In a world where processed foods and synthetic medicines dominate, reclaiming the natural healing power of wild plants reconnects us with God’s original design. The Bible speaks of the earth as a source of healing, and many of our common weeds are just waiting to be appreciated—and eaten!

By learning to identify and prepare plants like henbit, you not only add nutritional diversity to your diet but also foster a deeper appreciation for the abundance that surrounds us. It’s a small step towards a more natural, holistic approach to health—one rooted in faith and gratitude for God's creation.

Conclusion: Reclaiming Nature’s Gifts

Next time you see a patch of weed in your yard, don’t dismiss it as a nuisance. Instead, consider its potential—perhaps it’s a gift from God, a natural remedy that can nourish your body and soul. Remember, the Bible assures us that for every ailment, God has provided natural resources. By embracing and understanding the humble Henbit, we rediscover how to eat the weeds and live more naturally and healthfully.

Vegetables that contain protein If food prices have you scrambling down the aisles of the grocery store trying to find something that's more affordable than meat but still has protein, know that you're not alone! Back in the days when my grandparents went through the Great Depression, it was really tough times, but they survived through the hardships by growing their own food. There are a lot of veggies that actually do contain protein, and they're packed full of additional nutrients that our bodies all need. Have you ever pondered the question, what's the difference between griddle cakes, pancakes, hot cakes, skillet cakes, and flapjacks? Well, today, I would like to tell you the answer to that specific question. Which is that all five of these food items are exactly one and the same.  Homemade country pancakes I have decided to write two separate articles on the subject of how I make homemade pancakes from scratch. The first one was just to take you through the steps of how I make the pancake and waffle mix from scratch. Inside this article, I will be going more into depth on how I use that particular mix to make pancakes. In the other article, I also covered how to make homemade waffles from this same mix. The dry mix is the same for both, but needs to be prepared a little differently when adding the last few ingredients to make the waffle batter. (Hopefully splitting the t...

Growing Vegetable Plants in Rockwool Cubes

Growing Vegetable Plants in Rockwool Cubes Hey there, fellow gardeners! Today we're going to talk about a cool way to grow your own vegetables using rockwool cubes. It may sound fancy, but it's actually pretty simple and fun. Let's dive in! What You'll Need: First things first, you'll need some rockwool cubes . These are like little sponges that help your plants grow strong and healthy. You'll also need some vegetable seeds, a tray to hold the cubes, and water. I personally use these hydroponic grow trays with dome lids. Step 1: Soak the Cubes Before you plant your seeds, you'll need to soak the rockwool cubes in water. This helps them absorb moisture and provides a good environment for your plants to grow. Step 2: Plant Your Seeds Once your cubes are nice and soaked, it's time to plant your seeds. Make a little hole in the top of each cube and drop a couple of seeds in. Some seeds are so tiny and I generally end up planting more than two in each cube. ...

Low Calorie Meatloaf

Low calorie crock-pot meatloaf If you're looking for a meatloaf that doesn't require eggs, bread crumbs, ketchup, etc., then this might be the recipe for you. Today, I am creating a low calorie meatloaf without all the bells and whistles, but it still tastes amazingly good and has fewer calories. The meatloaf will be cooked inside my crock-pot on a meat rack. Doing this allows the excess grease to drip below the meatloaf as it cooks. Which in turn creates a pleasurable, greaseless meatloaf experience. Ingredients: 2 pounds of lean ground beef 1-2 bell peppers, de-seeded and diced finely (depending on size of the peppers), or 1 tablespoon of dried pepper flakes 1-2 tablespoons of onion flakes (amount depends on your preference) 1 teaspoon of garlic powder 1 teaspoon of seasoning salt 2 teaspoons of freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon of soul seasoning Sesame seeds and flax seeds, to sprinkle over the top of your meatloaf (optional) ½ cup of water, do pour inside your crock-...
